Dave East
When he was putting together his first full-length album, 2019's Survival, rapper Dave East knew he had a choice: He could swim with the current or swim against it.
Raised in Harlem and Queensbridge on New York street-rap classics-Hov, Nas, Biggie, Pun-East's gut told him to stick with tradition, with narrative, with a sound and style he felt had gotten lost in the cultural wash.
"It's like, it's not the go-to, you know what I'm saying?" he told Apple Music in 2019. "It ain't trendy. But it comes with where l'm from and what I represent. To have stories, to have real-life things that I happen to be able to put into words—| don't feel like that's something everybody can do."
Born David Brewster, Jr., in 1988, East started releasing mixtapes in 2010, eventually hooking up with Nas—a mentorship that helped put his career on a higher track. For all his fidelity to the past, East never comes off as nostalgic, holding ground as comfortably with trap- and pop-oriented artists like Lil Baby and Gunna as with old heads like Fabolous and Styles P—a balancing act that stands out in a culture where progress and tradition don't always get along. Yeah, he grew up then—but he's living now.

Howard Johnson
Howard Johnson is an American soul/disco singer, and founder of the group Niteflyte. He charted two songs on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart during the eighties - "So Fine," which spent one week at #1 in 1982, and "Let This Dream Be Real," which reached #19 in 1984.
The versatile R&B vocalist started out in Miami, holding fort in local bars and clubs until the appearance of a life-changing business contact. That was Sandy Torano, a guitarist and producer associated with performers such as the Commodores and Phyllis Hyman. Johnson was his choice for a new vocal group and thus began the singer's recording career. It was 1977, the group was called Niteflyte, and the label was Ariola. The project lasted for only two albums but created enough of abuzz for A&M to sign Johnson to a solo contract.
A trio of close associates — Kashif, Paul Laurence Jones, and Morris Brown — produced Keepin' Love New (1982), Johnson's solo debut; both "So Fine" and the title track did very well in the British market. The singer recorded two more albums for the label: Doin' It My Way (1983), produced by The System, and The Vision (1985), some of which was handled by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. At the end of the decade, the singer returned to A&M as part of the duo Johnson & Branson with Regis Branson. In the interim, Johnson did some recording with singer Donna Allen.
The '90s, if not a completely fallow period, represented a stark respite from the action-packed '80s. Johnson was not really to be seen until he showed up again with old pal Branson in the new millennium, this time at the behest of a Japanese outfit, Soul Japan, that had gone mad for the sound of old-school '80s soul. Packed and Waitin' was released in 2002. Roughly a decade later, Johnson's A&M albums were reissued by the Netherlands' PTG label.

Kele Le Roc
Kele le Roc was born Kelly Biggs in Mother's hospital, Hackney, East London. Her Jamaican mother was a clothes designer and her England born father, a dancer and model. It was obvious from an early age that kelly had a penchant for all things musical. “My earliest memory” says Kele “was when i was about 3 I was watching a musical on the telly and the Nicholas brothers were tap dancing. I remember trying to copy them. From that day my mother decided to send me to dance school.
Kele loved dancing and had dreams of performing in the West end and on Broadway. Singing obviously went hand in hand with this, but at the age of 12 kele suffered a bad knee injury. This incident propelled kele into focusing more intently on her singing.
The first song she ever recorded was a cover version of “Rolls Royce” Its Over. Although it wasn't long before kele was writing and recording her own material. She found a musical home with production team “Best Kept Secret” it was the first time that kele had worked with producers that she felt understood her musically and where she wanted to go with her sound. It was also where she would get the name Le Roc. “My engineer Digital named me Le Roc. It was kind of after a prince song called rock hard in a funky place, when I would sing he would say you rock hard.... So when the time came for a stage name Le Roc seemed quite apt. There was No Mr Biggs or Biggy smalls yet so Kelly Biggs just didn't sound right at the time.” says kele.
The sound that they would create together led to the white label release of underground hit “let me know” and got the attention of major labels, At the time 16 year old Kele was continually on tour supporting US Artists like Total, Horace Brown and Mona Lisa whilst studying performing arts at Epping Forest College. The 2 main contenders were First Ave and Sony Records in Chicago. Sony records in London had referred her as they felt her American sound and look would be more suited to that market.
Kele decided not to go to Chicago and pressed on with her career in London with notorious music duo “First Ave.” Kele was signed to them in 1996 and Licensed to Polydor Records in 1997. Kele spent 3 months in Los Angeles co writing and recording her first album “Every Body's Somebody” working with the Likes of Rhett Lawrence, (Mariah,Monica Eternal) Harvey Mason jr,(Brandy,Chante Moore, Aaron Hall) and Robbie Neville. CooLio and the great late Roger Troutman also featured on her first compilation.
“L.A was amazing” says Kele “here i was a teenager from London driving around in a convertible mustang living in a hotel in Beverley hills and hanging out with people like Bruce Willis, Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliot, Genuine and Hype Williams to name a few. I even met Rick james once at the traffic lights.”
Her first album was released in 1999 from which Ms Le Roc had 2 top ten singles and received an accolade of awards including 2 mobo's for best single “my love” and best newcomer. Sadly she parted company with Polydor due to creative differences but still remained at First Ave where she would fight to leave for a 3 years. Whilst First Ave had full belief in kele's abilities it was realised that they didn't know what direction to take her unique style in. “London is very contrived” says kele “especially for black music if they can't put you in a box and tick it they don't know what to do with you. At that time I wanted to make American sounding rnb but I'm also a big Prince fan and love his uniqueness so my style is a little quirky. First Ave didn't get me but wouldn't let me leave as they knew i was a star, so basically just left me on the shelf.”
In the meantime she found solace in working with other talented artists and exploring other genres of music. Artists like Courtney Pine, Danny Foster, Omar, Masters at work, Estelle, Todd Edwards, Delinquents, Fireworkz, Lemar, sticky, H money, Fundamental, Darren Martyn, Davinche, Shola Ama, Truth, Redrat, Done, ShyFx, JD aka da Dready, Fanatics, Agent X, Roni Size, Cassius Henry,Space cowboy, Damage and in 2001 released world wide smash “Romeo” with Basement jaxx.
“It's ridiculous but a few people were up in arms about me singing different genres, as far as I'm concerned God gave me a voice to sing he didn't give me limitations. I'm a soul singer and love all types of music, that i sing from my soul. ironically enough the garage remix of my love is my biggest hit to date and still regularly requested i always joke that song pays my bills” laughs kele.
When kele finally managed to negotiate and buy herself out of her deal in 2002 she then had the challenging task of A and R ing her new album project she also decided to add a few more strings to her bow and branched out into presenting and acting. Kele's skilful dance moves had a cult following on the channel four late night hit “bustamove” and she has starred in Mtv's Dubplate drama and indie films such as Rewind and Dirty Money 2. Kele is a residential showbiz presenter on INC tv and also Lived her original dream of starring in musicals touring the world as a principal in Spirit produced smash “i can't stop loving you” the life of Rays Charles. She runs and designs her own female club wear clothing Line “Funkin Bytch” and jewellery Line Glam Roc! Both available via mail order and in selected stores. These all seemed like natural progressions to kele as she saw it as just doing things that she enjoys already on a daily basis.
In may 2008 kele was selected amongst 8 other musically talented young individuals to go to Mali in west Africa to work on a music project called Routes to Roots. The project run by Biggafish was a unique platform to connect talented artists from England and Africa and to create an album, educational book for schools and a documentary series to be screened early next year on Mtv. Such experiences have allowed Kele to grow in many ways. She was once told you don't have to Live the lesson to learn it and whilst she appreciates that, kele would not change a thing in her life good or bad as it all has taken her to where she is right now and to a place where she is extremely happy. “I am so blessed” enthuses kele “it took a while, but I'm happy with the people i am creating my music with, i love my family especially my mum who is my hero and bought me up all by herself. I have wonderful friends and fans who are eagerly anticipating my new album penned Le Roc Music.
2015 and Kele is now Back in the studio with the infamous Basement jaxx and on tour. Also working with the house legend Roger Sanchez and new kids on the block Gorgon City. Fans of Kele's online cookery sessions can look forward to her cookery and entertainment show coming soon currently penned "What LeRoc is Cooking".

Kool DJ Red Alert
Frederick Crute (born November 27, 1956), known professionally as Kool DJ Red Alert, is an American disc jockey who rose to fame on WRKS 98.7 Kiss FM in New York City and is recognized as one of the founding fathers of hip hop music and culture.[2] His weekly radio show airs on WBLS 107.5 FM from Monday to Saturday at 6pm EST.
Red Alert is one of the first deejays to perform with the architects of hip hop Universal Zulu Nation. He built his radio show's fanbase by shouting out to listeners within the Tri-State area. Red Alert has been noted for breaking in such acts and artists as A Tribe Called Quest, Queen Latifah, and Black Sheep.[3] Red played a vital role in The Bridge Wars beginning in 1986. His legend grew immensely after being the first deejay to break the record South Bronx by Boogie Down Productions on his KISS-FM weekend radio show and club gigs in support of the Bronx-based hip hop group versus MC Shan, Marley Marl, and the Juice Crew.
Red Alert holds the all-time record for the most guest appearances among all hip hop artists and personalities in the history of music video. When the cassette tapes gained popularity in the 1970s, Red Alert was the first disc jockey to record mix compilation albums, which were later known as mixtapes. He also was the first mixshow disc jockey to introduce dancehall to mainstream radio on his KISS 98.7 FM during the mid 1980s

KRS One
Appearing on the rap scene in 1986 as Boogie Down Productions releasing his first hit single “South Bronx” with his late DJ Scott La Rock, KRS “the one” made it clear that Hip Hop was going to have to take itself a lot more seriously than simply being a music genre.
KRS, an acronym for ““Knowledge Reigning Supreme”, has been called the “conscience of Hip Hop” (Rolling Stone), “the greatest live emcee ever” (The Source), the “spokesperson for Hip Hop” (Wall Street Journal), “master teacher” (Zulu Nation) and the “son of Hip Hop” (Kool DJ Herc). With 20 published albums to his credit and his numerous appearances with other artists, KRS-One is believed to have written the most rhymes in Hip Hop’s history. In the 1990s as “hip-hop” grew more and more commercialized and corporate, it was KRS-One that openly rejected such cultural exploitation and materialism grounding Hip Hop in its original principles of peace, love, unity and safely having fun. Teaching everything from self-creation to stopping violence; from vegetarianism to transcendental meditation, from the establishment of Hip Hop Appreciation Week (every third week in May), to establishing Hip Hop as an international culture at the United Nations (2001), KRS-One has single-handedly held the history and original arts of Hip Hop together now for over two decades.
In addition to lecturing at over 500 universities in the United States and publishing three ground-breaking books; “The Science of Rap” (1995), “Ruminations” (2003), and the Gospel of Hip Hop” (2009), KRS-One has also established the Stop The Violence Movement (1989), influenced the creation of the “West-Coast All-Stars’ anti-gang anthem “We’re All In The Same Gang” (1990), warned the Hip Hop community against giving up their humanity for technological advancement (H. E. A. L.—Human Education Against Lies-1991), and has established the Temple of Hip Hop for the spiritual exploration of Hip Hop’s culture (1996). It was KRS-One who first argued that “rap is something we do; Hip Hop is something we live” and introduced the “I am Hip Hop” philosophy in 1994 which Black Entertainment Television uses as the title of their Hip Hop Lifetime Achievement Award today. Without question, KRS-One has been the loudest voice for the actual preservation and expansion of original Hip Hop worldwide.
When he is not touring or lecturing, on his so-called “down-time”, KRS-One continues to share his unique knowledge of Hip Hop to younger audiences eager to hear the ‘teacha’ speak. Operating as a kind of “pop-up” school, KRS-One’s Temple of Hip Hop has appeared in various cities in USA also in the UK and Europe offering the more serious student of Hip Hop an effective way to live and understand the culture of Hip Hop more deeply.

Loose Ends
Loose Ends cultivated an art in supreme sophistication with their groundbreaking experiments in British soul and R&B during the '80s. Decades later, their music remains as potent as it was when it first graced the airwaves and clubs of both the UK and US.
Once the band had been firmly established (with Nick Martinelli as producer), work was cut for their first set of material, which would become 1984’s A Little Spice, an album that not only bridged the gap between American and British pop influences, but also set the precedent for British contemporary R&B.
A Little Spice’s velvet-ensconced sophisti-pop is an entire world within the world of R&B, hovering just beneath the twilit atmospheres of smooth jazz. It retains a remarkable edge because it borrows just as heavily from funk and disco as it does hook-laden pop. It shouldn’t have budged from the quiet storm stations it was expected to be consigned to. But the album’s revisionist nature helped to ensure that it would find a niche in a market that had pegged new-wave as the hub of pop radio in the 1980’s. A sultry mix of champagne-pop, new-wave accents and the grooves of a richly delectable brand of R&B, A Little Spice captured listeners’ imaginations in a big way. Selling club-goers on dreams of penthouse decadence and refined living, Loose Ends’ debut signaled a new understanding and respect for British R&B that had not been previously established in such a manner by the band’s preceding contemporaries.
Released a year later in the US, A Little Spice’s American edition replaced a track originally available on the UK version with a number that would prove to be the band’s signature tune and biggest hit. Also made available on both the UK and US edition of Loose Ends’ sophomore release, So Where Are You?, the signature tune in question, “Hangin’ on a String (Contemplating)”, was one of the most definitive British R&B singles of the decade.
Crossing over into the US whilst doing massive damage on the charts in their homeland, the song achieved a poised and seamless balance of two respective musical cultures, straddling the line that lay between America’s street-smart urban funk born out of New York hip-hop and the smooth, refined gloss of British soul. Over a warm, glowing, synthetic bounce and slices of organ-grinding funk, the band members each lay down a vocal of impossible delectation, heralding a wave of British R&B talent that would soon flourish in the wake of the song.
A moment of sheer resplendence, “Hangin’ on a String” has been a go-to sample favorite of hip-hop artists everywhere 30 years on after its initial release; it’s a goldmine of sonic resources that is never exhausted. Furthermore, the song epitomizes supreme urbanity and demonstrates an interminable freshness so rarely achieved.
The hit single’s parent album featured a set of even groovier exploits, paring back much of the lush sonics of the debut for a stronger emphasis on dance club rhythms. In addition to their smash hit single, Loose Ends explore the darker neon hues of nightlife on 1985’s So Where Are You?, discovering a playful sense of mystery on colorfully textured numbers like “Magic Touch” and “New Horizon”. Aiming for a more nocturnal vibe of love and excitement on their sophomore effort, Loose Ends rev up the synthesizers, capitalizing on the ever-expanding technology of electronic dance music culture. If Kraftwerk humanized the synthesizer, then Loose Ends sensualised it, injecting blue-mood soul into their mechanized grooves.

After this critically acclaimed debut, Houston signed with Motown Records. Always a pathbreaker, at Motown, she claimed the top of the pop, R&B, and dance charts with her signature rendition of "Don't Leave Me This Way." Obie Trice
Obie Trice went from no one to someone in the rap world quickly when Eminem signed him to Shady Records and executive produced his debut. Born on the west side of Detroit in the Schoolcraft and Greenfield area, Trice began his rap career humbly. He dropped out of Cooley High School in the early '90s and began making ends meet, which wasn't too easy in the cold, abandoned streets of Detroit. His turning point came in 1998 with the birth of his daughter, Kobie. Shortly afterward, he took note of Eminem's breakthrough success in 1999 and began to have faith that he too could make it in the rap game, despite living in wayward Detroit.
Trice had begun rapping at a young age. His mother had bought him a karaoke machine that he used to practice, making tapes of himself over the beats of Run-D.M.C. and Big Daddy Kane. Over the years he improved his craft remarkably, releasing street tapes that began to generate some buzz in the local underground scene. These recordings came to the attention of Eminem, who in turn called up Trice for an audition, and it was all smiles and handshakes from that point on. First came a plug on D12's Devil's Night album ("Obie Trice [Intro]" [2001]), then features on the Eminem Show album ("Drips" [2002]) and the 8 Mile soundtrack ("Love Me," "Adrenaline Rush," and "Rap Name" [2002]), and finally Trice's album debut, Cheers, in 2003. The album went platinum, and Trice wrapped up recording his follow-up by the end of 2005.
On New Year's Eve 2006, he was driving home from a Detroit club with his girlfriend when he was shot in the head. Remarkably, he was able to exit the freeway, and an ambulance took him to a hospital in Southfield. It was determined that removing the bullet would be too risky; Trice was released within hours of arriving at the hospital. Between that event and the shooting death of D12's Proof, a friend and one of the people who met him at the hospital, Trice was compelled to record new tracks for his long-finished album. Second Round's on Me was finally issued in August 2006. Two years later he left Shady, feeling the label had failed to give him the proper promotional push but making it clear that Eminem was not to blame and the two were still very close. Mixtapes and guest appearances would carry Trice until 2012 when Bottoms Up became his first release for his own Black Market Entertainment label. Dr. Dre produced the album's title track while Eminem made two guest appearances, lending his vocals to "Richard" and producing the song "Going Nowhere." - Jason Birchmeier

Odyssey
THE GLORY DAYS of top vocal group Odyssey, one of the most successful soul/disco acts of their era, culminated in the early 1980’s when they topped the charts with “Use It Up And Wear It Out”, scoring several other Top Ten hits in Britain and throughout the world.
The group started out being billed as “The Lopez Sisters” when there were three of them – Lillian, Louise, and Carmen. An agent spotted them at a concert and booked them for a five month European tour. When they returned to the States, Carmen left the trio to marry, but Lillian and Louise resolved to continue, and so recruited Tony Reynolds as a replacement.
From their debut album emerged their first smash single - “Native New Yorker”, an international hit late in 1977. Additionally, Lillian’s eldest son, Steven Collazo had become part of Odyssey behind the scenes from its inception, recording as a background vocalist, journeyman session musician and musical director for their live performances and tours. A couple of years later, the group cut their “Hang Together” album. It contained “Use It Up And Wear It Out”, while the flipside, “Don’t Tell Me, Tell Her” received major airplay on US Black Radio. In the UK, “Use It Up” shot to the top ten and number one chart hit, followed by “If You’re Looking For A Way Out”, “Inside Out”, and the Lamont Dozier classic “Going Back To My Roots”, among others.
Performing around the UK, Europe and The Middle East throughout the 80’s and into the 90’s, the journey continued. In 1994, Steven moved up to co-front the group and produce new versions of the Odyssey classics while appearing with Lillian on television, touring arenas, top hotels, clubs, major holiday resorts and festivals throughout the UK and Europe.
The founder and first voice of Odyssey, Lillian Lopez-Collazo Jackson, died of cancer in September of 2012. Louise Lopez passed away from natural causes in January 2015 .
Steven Collazo continues the family legacy, taking their “odyssey” upwards and upward as a brand, performing and recording with an amazing array of talented singers, musicians, DJs, producers and remixers.
It's said that "old school" is today's "new school" and Steve's been working to combine the best of both worlds into today's Odyssey, introducing the brand to a whole new generation of enthusiasts who grew up with their music while remaining faithful to the group's more mature, core audience. With remixes from such superstar DJs as Dimitri from Paris, Louie Vega, Ashley Beedle, John Morales and countless others, the journey continues into the 21st century while keeping a back-glancing eye towards the classic sound which made ODYSSEY famous.

Sean Kingston
Jamaican singer/rapper Sean Kingston crafts a dance-friendly medley of dancehall, R&B, and Hip-Hop, which was featured most prominently on his breakthrough debut single, 2007's platinum chart-topper "Beautiful Girls." Subsequent hits "Take You There" and "Fire Burning" scored additional platinum hits for Kingston before a fortuitous collaboration with Justin Bieber "Eenie Meenie," helped propel him further into the pop mainstream.
A self-proclaimed product of his past, Kingston's history helped inform his sound. Born KiSean Anderson in Miami, Florida, and raised in Kingston, Jamaica from the age of six, he mixed more than a little dancehall and reggae into his hip-hop. He absorbed the adult lyrics of Ice Cube and Rakim. Taking his ability to write rhymes and hooks, he started working Miami's talent show and showcase circuit hard, eventually sharing the stage with Pitbull, Ludacris, and Trick Daddy. The Sony imprint Epic won and introduced their new artist in the spring of 2007 with the single "Colors 2007," featuring The Game and Rick Ross. Although he sounded much older, Kingston was only 16 when the track landed. With his second single, "Beautiful Girls," he took a sample of Ben E. King's "Stand by Me" and twisted it into a huge hit. This more polished, smoother, and less hardcore stance suited the singer and figured heavily into his self-titled debut full-length. His sophomore album, Tomorrow, arrived in 2009 and featured the singles "Fire Burning," "Face Drop," and "My Girlfriend." In 2013, he released the single "Letting Go (Dutty Love)," with special guest Nicki Manaj along with his third album, Back 2 Life, which landed on the U.S. R&B chart.
For the remainder of the 2010s, Kingston stuck to singles, issuing a steady stream that included "Wait Up" (2015), "One Away" (2016), "Breather" (2017), and "Amore e Capoeira," a 2018 collaboration with Takahi & Ketra and Giusy Ferreri. In 2019, he recruited Tony Lanez and DaVido for his single "Peace of Mind."

Yella from N.W.A
Yella is a performer, record producer, film director and producer and founding member of the pioneering rap group, N.W.A. N.W.A.’s improbable rise from marginalized outsiders to the most controversial and complicated voices of their generation remains one of rock music’s most explosive, relevant and challenging tales. From their Compton, California headquarters, Yella (Antoine Carraby), along with Eazy E (Eric Wright), Dr. Dre (Andre Young), Ice Cube (O’Shea Jackson) and MC Ren (Lorenzo Patterson), would – be force of will and through unrelenting tales of street life – sell tens of millions of records, influence multiple generations of the world over and extend artistic middle fingers to the societal barriers of geography, respectability, caste, authority and whatever else happened to get in their way.
In the early 1980s, Yella and Dr. Dre, influenced by Grandmaster Flash, formed the World Class Wreckin’ Cru, combining electronics and old school rap. Soon, Eazy E, MC Ren and Ice Cube were brought into the mix, forming N.W.A. As enduringly evergreen as the Beatles and as shockingly marketable as the Sex Pistols, N.W.A. (Niggaz Wit Attitudes) made a way out of no way, put their city on the map and solidified the disparate elements of gangsta rap into a genre meaty enough to be quantified, imitated and monetized for decades to come. But long before they were memorialized in the blockbuster biopic Straight Outta Compton or ranked by Rolling Stone among the “100 Greatest Artists of All Time,” they were just five young men with something to say. Five men, with at least twice that many opposing points of view among them, N.W.A. and its extended family tree of platinum satellites (an unmatched assemblage of talent including Snoop Dogg, Warren G, Nate Dogg, Bone Thugs-n-harmony, 2Pac, Eminem, 50 Cent, Kendrick Lamar) helped set the stage for hip-hop’s emergence as this planet’s most dominant musical life form.
As a producer, Yella and Dr. Dre produced Eazy E’s debut double platinum (2 million records sold) album, Eazy-Duz-It and both multi-platinum N.W.A. albums. N.W.A, collectively sold over 10 million records. In addition, Yella and Dr. Dre produced the gold selling debut albums of J.J. Fad. After the break-up of N.W.A., Yella produced J.J. Fad’s second album, Not Just a Fad, Yomo & Maulkie’s album, Are U Xperienced?, two tracks from Eazy E’s It’s On (Dr. Dre) 187um Killa, the hit single “Foe the Love of $” off of the triple platinum selling debut EP Creepin On Ah Come Up both from Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, Menajahtwa’s album Cha-licious and tracks from H.W.A’s Az Much Ass Azz U Want. Yella also oversaw Eazy-E’s final album in 1995 which went gold. In 1996, Yella released his debut solo album, One Mo Nigga ta Go, a tribute album dedicated to the memory of his long time friend and group member, the late Eazy E. After releasing his solo album, he decided to take a break from producing music and hopped into a very successful 15 year career directing and producing adult films.
In 2015, Yella was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of N.W.A. That same year, Yella collaborated with N.W.A group members Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and MC Ren to serve as a creative consultant on the critically acclaimed and award-winning biographical film Straight Outta Compton which grossed over 250 million dollars, once again impacting millions of multiple generations of people from city to city, state to state and country to country.
Currently, Yella continues to tour the world doing live performances, Q&A’s at Colleges and High Schools, as well as speaking at various Juvenile Halls for troubled teenagers, feeding the homeless at food drives and participating in various other non-profit related festivals and events. Yella’s still keeping it real coming straight outta Compton straight into the communities all over the globe, once again impacting the entire music world.

Village People
Village People is one of the most iconic music groups in the world. Their music is part of the international songbook and featured in dozens of major motion pictures, on Broadway, and in commercials. Of course, “Y.M.C.A” (along with its namesake dance) is played at almost every party, wedding, bar mitzvah and sporting event in the world. They’ve sold over 100 million records worldwide.
The debut album, released in 1977 featured the hit singles “San Francisco (You’ve Got Me),” and “In Hollywood (Everybody is a Star). At that time however the group was simply Victor Willis with use of session background singers. Auditions were held and a group of characters were assembled around Willis for a 1977 television appearance on American Bandstand.
Soon Village People was a real group (not just Victor Willis). Live musicians were added for tour purposes. The group was soon an international phenomenon. A second album Macho Man, was quickly released, followed by a third album titled Cruisin which featured the blockbuster hit “Y.M.C.A.” Next up was the Go West, the fourth album featuring the hit “In the Navy.” This was followed by the group’s sixth album in 1979 titled, Live & Sleazy which featured Willis performing all the hits, live from the Greek Theatre.
In November 1979, Willis exited the group during filming of the Can’t Stop the Music movie and motion picture soundtrack. This marked the group’s first album to not be certified gold by the RIAA coinciding with Willis’ exit.
The disco era ended, and Village People soon disbanded. Willis returned to the group in 1982 to record the Fox on the Box album. He soon exited again.
A touring version of the group (without Willis) with use of pre-recorded music/tracks and replacement members was put together in the late-1980s. Over the years, various replacement members continued to tour as a track act well into the 2000s.
Willis returned once again as lead singer in 2017 leading up to the group’s 40th anniversary. Village People’s iconic cop and writer of the group’s biggest hits, including “YMCA,” “Macho Man,” “Go West,” and “In the Navy,” was again at the helm with live musicians once again backing the group.
Since Willis’ 2017 return, Village People is now more popular than ever. The group returned to the charts in 2019 and 2020 with “Happiest Time of the Year,’ and “If You Believe,” both written by Willis and quickly becoming hits by breaking into Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart top 20.
Recent television appearances include Fox New Year’s Eve Times Square, and Good Morning America. The group continues to perform to sold out audiences worldwide.
